I liked - The casa was extremely comfortable and clean and everyone went out of their way to accommodate me.

My experience in Cuba was everything I had asked for. The family did everything to make me feel comfortable and to ensure my visit would be memorable, and it was. I plan to return this year and stay at the same Casa.

Casa Misleydis & Gustavo in Trinidad #5 (out of 5)
Cleanliness #5
Comfort #5
Location #5
Friendliness #5
I liked - this place is like a mini mansion where I had a lot of privacy, access to a full kitchen, hammocks and the gorgeous garden area where I got to eat a lavish breakfast each day. I was lucky enough to meet the program leader, Rena, when I was there. Misleydis and Rena are absolute sweethearts. They were so kind to help me with countless requests from arranging horseback tours, travel to Havana, tours of the town, places to eat and they even hooked it up with a bike for free so I could ride to the beach.
What else??? They speak English, cook amazing food, the rooms are gorgeous, the bathrooms look like they just have been remodelled, warm water, beautiful views from your room, all the amenities are taken care of and the house is very close to the central part of town and the roads to take you to the beach.

Our 6 night/5 day Cuba trip was an add-on to our tour of Mexico & Route 66 USA, and well worth while. We really appreciated being able to leave all the arrangements in Rena’s capable hands. The plan included 2 home stays and 3 communal taxis, including picking us up from the airport. All three taxis went well, although we were amazed that one of them showed 441,700kms on the clock – apparently this not uncommon in Cuba! Some limited Spanish goes a long way. Trinidad home-stay: Misleydis & Gustavo were wonderful; they are both charming and very warm personalities. Their breakfasts were excellent and the courtyard setting was good. Their command of both English and “Spanglish” was excellent. Would have loved to stay longer with them. Your advice was correct that in a short break, four nights in Havana was too much and 3 would have been better. However we feel that 2 nights in Trinidad was enough as we didn’t want to do any of the “attractions” simply visit the town. We realised that we should have done more preparation so as to put the history and economy of Cuba into context – we were a little lost with the number of revolutions they’ve had. Hearing from other travellers we wish we’d also taken time to visit Santa Clara and Santiago de Cuba – ah well, another time! Thanks for a great experience!

Our five night stay in Trinidad worked out perfectly and we thoroughly enjoyed staying with Gustavo and Misleydis. The house was spacious and very clean and comfortable, the food was abundant and delicious and the conversation was engaging. The neighborhood was quiet and away from the bustle of the tourist areas but within walking distance of everything. They made sure everything worked as planned for our excursions and workshops and that we enjoyed our stay thoroughly. We felt we really did experience the real Cuba in Trinidad. It was a pleasure in all ways. I spent three days in the ceramic workshop and my wife spent three days with a professor of painting, organized by Experience the Real Cuba, and actually came home with a wonderful still life in oils. My mornings with the pottery workshop were tailored to my interests and were exactly what I was looking for –the opportunity to talk with Cuban potters and see how they produce their wares. Gustavo even loaned me one of his bikes so I could come and go in style. What were the advantages of using Rena to arrange it all? To start it’s so easy to communicate with her and she patiently answered all of my questions. Before leaving home I felt I had honest answers and realistic expectations. The pleasant surprise was in finding that it was even better than described and well worth the slight extra cost of using her as a booking service. In reality it would have been a headache to try to arrange art encounters, excursions and a casa particular and have it all work out without hassle and stress. We spent two weeks in Havana with a different program prior to visiting Trinidad so that we really appreciated the attention to detail and commitment to making our stay in Trinidad really be topnotch. Cuba is a multi-layered and fascinating society completely unlike any other. It’s already over flowing with tourism but going with Experience the Real Cuba will give you a taste of Cuba as it is today, away from the mass of tourists and in a very supportive environment. You’ll get to see and perhaps understand a bit more intimately how tourism is bringing changes to a vibrant society that is focused on the future and on trying to better their lives. If you have good Spanish skills, so much the better, but if you don’t, it will still be an exceptional experience.

Going to Cuba with Experience the Real Cuba is like going on holiday with a trusted friend, and Rena, you helped make it happen for me. You said it would be amazing and it was! I went there on a shoestring, you gave me a thorough breakdown of everything which helped me manage my budget down to the last CUC! You arranged everything with efficiency with helpful suggestions. At Misleydis and Gustavo’s, I enjoyed wholesome and delicious meals and very warm hospitality. Going to Trinidad has been a one in a lifetime experience unlike any other holiday I’ve had. For me it has been a place where I’ve met some very wonderful people, learned to speak some Spanish and enjoyed salsa everyday. So many thanks Rena, Misleydis and Gustavo!

I spent three nights with Gustavo and Misleydis. The house was always clean, the room spotless, and the food amazing and plenty. But the most wonderful part of my experience was meeting Gustavo, Misleydis and their family. Obviously if you are reading this you are not interested to spend all your time in Cuba, on beaches and in resources, so here I found a possibility to learn and understand a bit on how some of the Cubans live. Misleydis (with excellent English) a warm hearted, knowledgeable lady, and Gustavo a hard working and funny gentleman, both born and raised in Trinidad, a beautiful quite town that really grows on you. I knew that I will miss my hosts and Trinidad the moment I looked at the town tower for the last time. Thanks Rena for the all the info and help. Afshin

Hola Rena, Misleidys y Gustavo, I can’t thank you enough for arranging my visit to Cuba and making my stay there an absolute joy. Misleidys and Gustavo are spectacular hosts. The whole family welcomed me into their lives and made me feel at home right away. Misleidys is a marvelous cook and Gustavo is the master fixer of all things – including my bicycle. Our many conversations about life in Cuba offered a priceless glimpse into this beautiful and complex country – “es complicado”. My three weeks of Spanish classes with Juani were wonderful. She is a great, patient teacher, and is very happy to share her wealth of experience with her students. Trinidad is a great place to kick back and spend some time. The town is big enough to keep you entertained with all the arts and cultural activities, but small enough to be very safe and welcoming. The setting is spectacular – close to both the beach and the mountains. I can’t recommend this experience any more highly. You will fall in love with this family and with Cuba. I can’t wait to go back. ¡Te extraño mucho!
